Mamye Fitzgerald

Mamye, daughter of the late Elizabeth Wilson Murray and Mike Tolbert, was born on October 15, 1947, in Allendale County, South Carolina. Mamye attended Fairfax Training School in Fairfax, South Carolina. Upon graduation, Mamye moved to Chester, Pennsylvania. Pursuing her career ambitions, she began her retail career at Corvette’s until their closing. She soon married the late Hayward Alexander. From this union Khalid Alexander, Sr was born. In 1976 Mamye started at John Wanamaker’s in Springfield, Pennsylvania, Mamye soon found her passion for cosmetics, alongside providing care to patients at Martin’s Run Nursing Home for thirteen years, where she made lifelong friendships. On April 20, 1985, Mamye married her late husband of 37 years, Franklin Fitzgerald, Sr. Out of this union, Franklin Fitzgerald, Jr was born. Mamye and Franklin, Sr. found immense joy in family, traveling, and making new musical memories throughout their lives. Dedicated to continuing her education, Mamye pursued her dreams, graduating with high honors from Delaware County Community College with an associate’s degree in early childhood education. Moving on to become Director at Today’s Child Daycare. All while earning her bachelor’s degree in organizational management from Immaculata University in 2002, at the age of fifty-three. After a long tenured career of 32 years in retail, Mamye retired from Strawbridge and Clothier in 2008. Mamye cherished her family and loved fishing, shopping, sewing, and cooking. Mamye departed this life at the age of 77 on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the Chester County Hospital in West Chester, PA. She is survived by her two sons, Khalid (Cherrell) Alexander, Sr. and Franklin (Jenise) Fitzgerald, Jr.; two grandchildren, Khalid Alexander, Jr. and Ella Marie Fitzgerald; two sisters, Louise (John) Patterson Sr. and Roxanne Davis; three brothers, Howard (Sharnell) Murray, Joseph (Debbie) Murray, and John (Brenda) Murray; and two sisters-in-law, Denise Tolbert and Lydia Fitzgerald. She was preceded in death by her brother, Mike Tolbert, Jr., and her sister, Bertha Wright, who passed away on the same day. She also leaves behind a host nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
