Loretta Johnson

Loretta Johnson was born on February 12, 1957, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Willie Johnson, Sr. and Elizabeth Johnson. She was educated in the Philadelphia public school system, attending Harrington Elementary School, Shaw Junior High School, and graduating from West Philadelphia High School in 1975. From an early age, Loretta lived a vibrant and active life. Deeply rooted in her faith, she was baptized as a young girl and became a devoted member of Enon Baptist Church. Her love for gospel music was evident throughout her life, she sang from childhood and went on to lead the Heavenly Chimes Choir while also lending her voice to the Sanctuary Choir. In addition to her church involvement, Loretta participated in Girl Scouts and enjoyed tap dancing. After graduating high school, Loretta pursued higher education at the Community College of Philadelphia, where she earned an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice. She continued her studies at the Philadelphia College of Textile and Science, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology. Lastly, she earned her Paralegal’s certificate. Loretta dedicated her life towards helping the community through service. She started her professional career as a Social Worker in Philadelphia. She then went to the Philadelphia Department of Corrections, where she worked faithfully until her health required her to retire. After retirement, she worked as a para legal at PNC. Finally, she came full circle as a CASA worker for the state of Delaware. Even after relocating to Wilmington, Delaware, she remained active in church services and choir groups until the declining health led her to step away. A woman of strong faith and deep love for family, Loretta found joy in bringing people together. She and her beloved wife and life partner, Gladys, were known for hosting family and friends with warmth and generosity. Their home was often filled with laughter, good food, and joyful gatherings by the pool. Loretta especially expressed her love through cooking, using comfort food to bring happiness to those around her and the wisest of counsel to anyone in need, be they family or stranger. Loretta and Gladys were blessed with four boys: Damon, Jabbar, Shawn, and Antoine. They also lovingly helped raise their nieces, Brianna and Tianna. Loretta took great pride in her children, who have grown into accomplished individuals with families and professional careers of their own. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Eula and Hattie Ruth. Two brothers in law Isaac and David. Loretta leaves to cherish her memory her devoted wife, Gladys; her four boys, Damon, Jabbar, Shawn, and Antoine; daughters-in-love Tira, Toya and Geneva; two sisters, Belinda and Nanette; one brother, Willie Jr.; five sisters-in-law Beverly, Deann, Yolanda, Natasha and Skylit; three brothers-in-law Elliott, Jahza and Isaiah and a host of loving family members and dear friends. Loretta’s life was guided by her unwavering faith, inspired by the words: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be removed and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.” She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
