n Loving Memory of John H. Smoak September 10, 1926 – May 27, 2025 On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, surrounded by the warmth and love of his family at home, John H. Smoak peacefully entered eternal rest. At 98 years old, he transitioned from this life to the next, leaving behind a legacy rooted in love, strength, and unwavering faith. Born on September 10, 1926, in Allendale, South Carolina, John was the cherished son of Theodore and Bertha Smoak. Raised in a home that valued hard work, family, and God, John carried those values with him throughout his life. He lived with quiet dignity, touching the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. John married the late Thelma Britt Smoak and together they built a loving home filled with laughter, resilience, and devotion. Their union brought forth six children who were the pride of John’s life: John, Dorothy, Hurley, Alvin, Annslee and Michelle. He was a devoted father, who led by example—teaching the importance of hardwork, integrity,humility, and compassion. John spent many years working at Sun Shipbuilding and Drydocking Company, where his dedication and strong work ethic earned him the respect of his peers. He later continued his service at The Towne House in Media, Pennsylvania, contributing faithfully until his retirement. Through every season of life, John was known as a steady presence—honest, dependable, and kind. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Donella Butler, his son John H. Smoak Jr., his brother Theodore Smoak Jr., and sisters Estelle Brown, Arrie Mae Anderson, Barbara Ann Floyd, Angela Woodbright and Isabella Stevens. Though his journey here has ended, John’s memory lives on through his children: Dorothy Smoak, Hurley Smoak ( Romaine), Alvin Smoak ( Bernadette), Annslee Smoak, and Michelle White (Willie); three devoted sisters: Mary Washington, Ethel Mae Jones, and Alberta Clemens; fourteen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; loving caregivers Curtis Smoak and Shantele Smoak; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends. John H. Smoak lived a full and meaningful life—rooted in faith, guided by love, and marked by grace. His presence was a blessing, his wisdom a gift, and his love an anchor. While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the beautiful legacy he leaves behind. May his soul rest peacefully in the arms of the Lord, and may we find comfort in knowing that love never dies—it lives on in each of us he touched.
