Betty J. Staples

Betty Jean Staples was born on April 5, 1951 to the late Freddie Fleming, Jr and Cathy Lane Fleming in Greenwood, South Carolina. Her family migrated to Chester, PA when she was very young. Betty started to display her academic abilities early in her life. Betty joined the St. Daniels United Methodist Church at a young age. She enjoyed Vacation Bible School and Sunday School. She attended church services until her health began to fail. She attended the Chester Upland public schools and was placed on the honor roll. Betty always excelled academically graduating from Chester High School in 1970. She continued to further her education at Delaware State University graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Sociology in June 1974. She pursued her education further by graduating from Bryn Mawr College with a Masters of Science Degree in Sociology in May 1976. In 1975 she was united in marriage to Clifford Staples, Sr. (affectionately called Big Skeet) for 46 years. Out of this union a handsome baby boy was born on August 11,1977 named Clifford Staples, Jr. (affectionately known as Little Skeet). Her happy family circle was her pride and joy. Sadly, her circle was broken when Big Skeet suddenly passed away on July 12, 2021. Betty was employed by Bell Telephone in the early 1970's in Upper Darby, Pa. The company experienced great growth. On June 30, 2000 Bell Atlantic Corporation merged with GTE Corporation, Inc. to become Verizon. Communications, Inc. Her office moved to Center City, Phila. She enjoyed riding the train with friends and coworkers every day. Shortly after this merger, Betty retired as a Payroll Analyst from Verizon having served over 35 years Betty was a humble and sweet spirit. She was faced with many medical challenges and never once complained. She was a recipient of an organ donation which allowed her to survive an additional 30 years of life. She was a medical miracle She pushed her way through every trial and tribulation with faith and a smile. Betty's hobbies were completing crossword puzzles and watching the Lifetime channel. She was predeceased in death by Clifford Staples, Sr. - husband; Freddie Fleming, Jr. - Father; Benjamin Fleming - uncle; Carlee Fleming - aunt; Kaybertha McCready – Aunt; Leroy Staples - Brother-in-law; Sonya Staples -Niece; Bernice, Della, Inez, Carrie-Maternal Great Aunts. She is survived by Clifford Staples - son; Cathy Fleming - Mother; Irene Clements-Sister; Deborah Graham- sister (Sam); Claudell Staples - Brother-in-law(Venera); Alphonso Staples - brother-in-law; Nannie Cottman - sister-in-law; Carolyn Weathers - sister-in-law (Edward); Nieces: Kia LaDawn Clements, Angela Tamia Dinkins (John), Christal Michelle Morris (William), Ebony Patrice. Clements. A host of additional cousins, nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
