Annie Mae Toogood

Annie Mae Toogood, born to the late Hallie Ann Burwell in Townsville, North Carolina on January 2, 1930. Annie Mae passed away peacefully at home on Sunday morning May 18, 2025. She was the youngest of her siblings of four sisters, one brother and a nephew, Edward Burwell whom she always referred to as her brother. She was educated in the Townsville School system. Annie Mae came to Chester in 1947 after the passing of her mother to live with her oldest sister and brother in law, Helen and William Brincefield. There she met and married the late Robert J. Toogood with whom they raised six children and one nephew, Brett Fryer. Annie Mae was a stay at home mom most of her life. She also helped watch children of friends while they would go off to work. Later in life, after all of her children were gone from home, she began her working career at the Chester-Upland School District as a school bus aide and a cafeteria aide at the High School. She later worked for Elwyn, Inc. and the Delaware County Foster Grandparent Program at various sites which she loved. Annie Mae was a devoted member of Spencer Memorial U.A.M.E. Church which later became Saint Peter's Non-Denominational Church. She was a faithful and devoted member of the Stewardess Board, a member of the Mass Choir, Female Chorus and Senior Choir for many, many years. She was an active member of the Culinary Committee. She regularly attended Bible Study. Her favorite scripture was the 23rd Psalm. Annie Mae enjoyed sitting on her porch talking with her neighbor Alberta Duncan and people waving to her as they passed by. Annie Mae was friends with everyone especially her lifelong best friend, Ms. Dorothy Dill. They would talk with each other every day. She also loved going to the Chester's Senior Center and being with her younger friends Valeria Hood-Curry and Renee Crews. There were also guy friends she would talk with while at the center. She had many, many friends and just loved everyone! Her favorite time was being spent with her daughters Robin and Pela and going with them to the casino. Annie Mae was preceded in death by her mother Hallie Ann Burwell, all her siblings, daughter Margaret Ann Foreman and grandson Brion Lamar Toogood. She leaves to cherish her memory three sons Floyd (Shelley), Cyrus (Debra), Robert, Jr. (Chilita) and two daughters Pela (Warner) and Robin; Ten Grandchildren: Seijra, Kimairis, Anthony, Jabree, Jasmine, Robert (RJ), Tiaira, Marvin and Shawn. Nine Great Grandchildren: Isabelle, Jacques, Damian, Amira, Jayden, Jayce, Masen, Fatima, Breshawn; two Great Great Grandchildren Navi and Rhue. In addition, she leaves one sister-in-law, Betty Burwell of Baltimore, Maryland and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, many family and friends; her church family and her best, best Friend Dorothy Dill (Dot).
