Annie A. Gray

Annie A.E. Gray was born on 8/18/1930 in Mount Olive, North Carolina to Shepard Daniel and Annie Nora Elliott. She departed this life on 11/21/2025 surrounded by her children in her home. Annie was affectionally known as “Mom” in the neighborhood as no child ever had to go hungry or be in need of a place to stay. She was an emergency foster care mother for teenaged girls. Ironically when some girls were placed elsewhere they’d run away and refuse to return to care unless they were able to be placed back in her care. Until her death many of the young women returned to visit. Annie became a member of Temple Baptist Church many years ago on the same day as her children were baptized. In her service she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Carolina club. Annie graduated from Barbara Scotia College with a Bachelor of Arts in Home Economics. She went on to become a teacher at Slaighton Farms; She was Director of the Greater Chester Movement; Teacher and subsequent Director of the Headstart Program; Director of Citizens for Action Now; Manager at Chester Housing Authority and lastly Deputy Mayor of Chester to Willan Mae Leake. Annie was a member of the following organizations: 2Nd District lecturer for Deborah Grand Chapter of the Eastern Star. Past Worthy Matron of Leah Chapter #27. Past Royal Commandress of Eliza A. Parker Charity Royal Court #28. Past Loyal Lady Ruler of Chester Assembly #30 and a member of the former Naomi Tent #11. Anne was predeceased by her loving Husband Johnie Lee Gray 1st; Rosa J. Golson (daughter); Johnie Lee Gray 2nd (Son); Dana Gray (Granddaughter) and Johnie Lee Gray 3rd (Grandson). Left to mourn are: Debby Gray Madison (Daughter); Donna Gray (Daughter); Paul Gray Sr (Son) and Mark Gray Sr (Son). Grandchildren: Donna Smith, Barry Madison Jr, Janelle Bradway, Bryan Golson, Lauryn Hudson, Paul Gray Jr, Mark Gray Jr, Danica Gray. Great Grandchildren: Alicia Collier, Alexandra Smith, Gray Bradway, Elyse Hudson and Charlotte Hudson. Siblings: Eleanor Henderson and Rev Dr. William C. Elliott both of North Carolina.
