Lillian- “Lily, a flower; beauty” Lillian Whitley was called home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 26, 2021. She was born in Goldsboro, North Carolina on October 6, 1937 to the late Willie Ann Cobb Whitley and Henry Whitley. Born the sixth of twelve children, Lillian and her sister Rachel often took on the responsibility of helping care for their siblings. Lillian was always willing to help with anything around the house. Lillian accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at a young age. She attended First African Baptist Church in Goldsboro, North Carolina where her relationship with the Lord grew. Lillian graduated from Dillard High School in Goldsboro, North Carolina in 1955. During her time at Dillard High School, she was a significant member of the drama club. No matter the role big or small, Lillian loved to participate in various plays and showcases. Lillian was a hardworking and intelligent student receiving A’s and B’s on all her report cards. She was a social butterfly that loved to be around others. Shortly after graduating from high school, Lillian went to New York to live with her cousin. During her time in New York, Lillian worked at a garment district. She would often send her sisters fashionable garments such as blouses and skirts. Lillian was blessed with one son, Anthony Keith Whitley. She cherished being his mother. Lillian moved to Chester, Pennsylvania in 1960. She was a member of a bowling league for several years. Lillian also enjoyed planning events for her friends and sometimes would even rent fancy limousines. Lillian worked as a psych nurse at Tri County Hospital and Haverford State Hospital. After twenty years of dedicated service, Lillian retired. Lillian loved the Lord and it showed throughout her life. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church in Chester, Pennsylvania. She was the Sunday School Superintendent and a Bible School Teacher. As a member of the Prayer Band, Lillian enjoyed gathering with members before service and praying for those who needed prayer. Lillian hosted Tuesday Bible Study in her home for many years. She really enjoyed that time with her bible study group, whether it was learning or just sharing about the goodness of the Lord. Lillian was also a member of the Mt. Pleasant Senior Group Ministry. After many years of being a member and serving in the church, Lillian became a deacon at Providence Baptist Church. Lillian was a loving, kind, caring, and God-fearing woman. She valued her relationships with her family, friends, and most importantly with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. You could always count on receiving a smile and the warmest hug whenever you were in her presence. Anyone who had the pleasure of being around Lillian would agree that she embodied the very meaning of her name. Lillian was preceded in death by three brothers: Epimetheus Whitley, Josiah Whitley, Henry (Madeline) Whitley, Jr, and two sisters: Pandora Wooten and Gwendolyn Carr. She leaves to cherish her memory: her beloved son, Anthony Keith Whitley, three brothers: Dock Whitley of Fayettville, North Carolina, Jehoram (Barbara) Whitley of Bear, Delaware, Marvell (Joanna) Whitley of Magnolia, New Jersey, three sisters: Rachel Vinson of St. Paul, North Carolina, Deloris (William) Riley of Chester, Pennsylvania, Barbara Cottrell of Buffalo, New York and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87850199291?pwd=a1VEbHZ5R1FrbngyUTdLcndLd3U3Zz09
