Dawna M. Johnson Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Dawna M. Johnson was born May 27, 1962 and reared in Chester, PA to the late James R. and Caroline B. Jones. She was preceded in death by a sister, Roxanna C. Jones; one niece, Shameka Hilton and three nephews - Tyrek Duncan, Shawn R. Berrien and Jeremiah Proffitt. She graduated from Chester High School in 1980 and continued her education at Temple University; Philadelphia, PA. She graduated with a degree in Computer Programming. While attending Temple University she was a member of the Kappa Sweethearts Club and was on the Step Team. She was a seamstress for a number of years designing dresses for Joan Calabrese. During her employment with Joan Calabrese, she made a dress that was worn by one of the actresses in one of the Charlie’s Angels movie. Dawna attended New Destiny Christian Center under the leadership of Pastors David and Teresa Verdecchio. While attending New Destiny Christian Center, along with her husband, she taught a Doctrine of Foundation Class and a Circle Group. She was the leader of the Hospitality Ministry and a part of the Intercessory Prayer Team. In addition, she successfully completed a ministry course of study through New Destiny Christian Center’s Bible School. Dawna would have graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Ministry. Prior to attending New Destiny Christian Center, she attended Bethany Baptist Church in Lindenwald, NJ where she was part of the Praise Dance Team and worked in the Christian Book Store. Dawna’s favorite book of the Bible was Ruth, because to her Ruth was steadfast, committed and wouldn’t give up. Ruth 1:16 - 17 “And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: 17 where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.” Her character never waivered. As stated by a college friend “She was always sweet, helpful and assertive. She didn’t start any trouble and would not accept trouble. Everybody loved her.” As stated by a church member “There was a gentleness about Dawna and also an authority about her. She could correct you but you knew it was from a love relationship. When you looked into her eyes, there was such peace in her eyes. When our eyes met, it was like we had a language where we understood each other and did not have to say anything.” Dawna was a sweet, loving, beautiful caring person. Whatever she did, she gave her ALL. Dawna always said what she meant and meant what she said. She inspired many with her words of encouragement and was always upbeat regardless of situations/circumstances. She had a listening ear without being judgemental. But most importantly of all, she loved the LORD. Dawna, who was a loving wife, leaves to cherish wonderful memories, her husband, Curtis Johnson; one step daughter - Latoya; two sisters - Caroline (Stephen) and Rhonda (John); two brothers - James (Toye) and Aaron (Nichole); one brother-in-law - Keith (Yvette); twelve nieces - Danita, Jessica, Brandie, Chanda, Davona, Janani, LaKeysha, A’ishah, Corie, Nicolette, Kaliyah and Aminah; eleven nephews - John, Julius, James Jr., Shakir, Jamir, Syncere, Shareef, Michael, Aaron Jr., Jeremy and Shawn. Our hearts are saddened since Dawna said goodbye for now; but we know she is forever in the presence of the Lord and we choose to rejoice!! Her Family
