Verna Lee Pierce

Verna Lee Pierce was born December 23, 1933, in Media, Pennsylvania; the second child of Kennard and Amelia Dorsey-Pierce-Blake. She was born in Chestertown Maryland and was a life-long resident of Media, Pa. Verna received her education from the Nether Providence School District. Verna worked as a domestic for various families in the Rose Valley/Media area employed by Stephen and Emma Forbes, Kenneth and Nelvon Grina, Dr. Joseph and Jeanne Stock, and Norman and Phyllis Larson. Verna enjoyed her work and became an honorary member of the families she worked for. Verna grew up in a Christian home and attended St. Paul AME Zion Church in Media. In her youth and young adult years, she accompanied her grandmother to Church during the week to help clean and prepare for Sunday services. In June of 1994 Verna accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior, a decision; she affirmed was the greatest choice she had ever made. In 2000 Verna became a registered member of St. Paul AME Zion Church, under the direction of Rev. Brian Powe. Her favorite Bible scripture was the 23rd Psalm which she would resort to for comfort and solace, her favorite songs, “I’ll Fly Away and It Is Well With My Soul”. At home, Verna loved being with her family. She loved to laugh, sing and be jovial. She had a special connection with all her nieces and nephews and loved being around them. Verna always thanked you for anything you did for her large or small. Making the sign of the Cross with kisses on your face was one of her favorite things to do to her family members (forehead, chin, the right cheek and the left cheek). In later years, Verna was cared for by her sister Sandra, niece Amelia and her daughter Madelyn with the assistance of her loving family and friends, caring Doctors, Nurses, aides, and Holistic Care Hospice who were phenomenal during her last days with us. Verna is preceded in death by her parents Kennard Pierce, Amelia Dorsey-Pierce-Blake, and stepfather Horace “Pop” Blake; Brothers: Kennard, Ronald, Rober, Russell, and Dennis; Sisters: Barbara, Alice, Carmen, Ruth, Sister-in-Law Nancy Young-Pierce, brother-in-law William Benson, honorary brother-in-law Lorenzo Pettijohn, and other loved ones. Verna leaves to mourn her passing: Bro. Calvin Pierce and Sis. Sandra Pierce of Media, Pa where she resided for many – many years, ; Sister-in-laws: Sylvia Pierce of Aston Pa, Matilda “Minnie” Pierce and Mary Pierce of Chester Pa; Brothers Vincent (Robin) Blake of Olmsted Ohio, Lloyd (Emma) Blake of Media Pa; Sisters: Irma Benson, and Iris (William) Ryals of Chester Pa, nephew Forrest Durnell whom she affectionately called her “son”, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, family and friends.
