Myrtle V. Craig

A Life Well Lived Myrtle Craig was born on Tuesday, March 10, 1925, in Chester, Pennsylvania. She transitioned peacefully at Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital on Sunday, June 21, 2026. Myrtle was born and raised in Chester, Pennsylvania. She was the thirteenth of fourteen children born to the late William and Georgianna Blair. She received her education in the Chester School District and later worked at Scott Paper and Crozer Hospital. On February 16, 1941, Myrtle married Gilbert B. Craig, Sr. From this union, they were blessed with four children: Janet Robinson, Margaret Craig, Gilbert Craig, and Joyce Craig. Affectionately known as “Mert” by family and friends, Myrtle was the beloved matriarch of her family. She devoted much of her life to caring for her loved ones as a homemaker and was known for her nurturing spirit, warm heart, and the love she poured into everyone around her. Standing at exactly five feet tall, Myrtle was proof that true strength has nothing to do with height. She led her family with love, laughter, and a firm, no nonsense hand. Her humor, her honesty, and her commanding presence made her the heart and anchor of her home. Her passion for cooking led her to Iccona’s Bar/Kitchen on 7th Street, where she cooked and served her famous crab cakes, black eyed peas, fried chicken, greens, string beans, and—let’s not forget—those pig feet. Her food was a reflection of her love: hearty, comforting, and made to bring people together. Myrtle enjoyed hosting family and friends during holidays and birthdays, always filling her home with love, laughter, music, and joy. She had a lifelong passion for music and dancing. In her earlier years, she competed in—and often won—dance contests, a reflection of her vibrant spirit. Even later in life, you could hear music playing from her home before reaching the front door. Myrtle was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gilbert B. Craig, Sr.; her daughters, Janet Robinson and Margaret Craig; her granddaughters, Teresa Robinson and Ciarra Corbin; and her grandsons, James Robinson Jr. and Bryant Potts. She leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Gilbert R. Craig Jr.; her daughter, Joyce Craig; five grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. Myrtle Craig lived a beautiful life filled with love, family, music, laughter, and service. Her legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
