“To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 5:8 With hearts filled with sorrow, yet overflowing with gratitude for a life extraordinarily well lived, we celebrate the beautiful life and enduring legacy of Mary Elizabeth Smith. On Friday, July 31, 2026, at the remarkable age of 101, Mary peacefully transitioned from this earthly life into eternal rest. For more than a century, Mary’s life was a testimony of faith, perseverance, compassion, service, and unconditional love. She lived not merely to count the years, but to make her years count—pouring herself into her family, her church, her profession, and her community. Mary was born on March 5, 1925, in Lumberton, North Carolina, to the late Alex and Estelle Thompson. Raised with strong Christian values and a deep appreciation for family, Mary developed at an early age the qualities that would characterize her throughout her life: kindness, determination, generosity, strength, and an abiding faith in God. Her spiritual foundation was established early in life. In 1941, Mary was baptized at First Baptist Church in Stedman, North Carolina, publicly affirming a faith that would remain the anchor of her life for the next eight decades. After relocating to Pennsylvania, she eventually united with Shiloh Baptist Church in Chester, where she became a faithful and devoted member in 1958. Mary believed that faith was more than something spoken, it was something lived. At Shiloh, she faithfully served on the Usher Board, greeting worshippers with the warmth, dignity, and beautiful smile for which she became known. Drawing upon her professional calling, she also served as a church nurse, caring for members of the congregation and demonstrating through her actions what it truly meant to be a servant of God. A Calling to Care for Others Mary received her early education in the North Carolina school system. Possessing a natural gift for caring for others, she later attended the Pennsylvania School of Nursing, where she earned her nursing degree and prepared for what would become a lifetime of compassionate service. For more than 40 years, Mary worked in private duty nursing, faithfully caring for individuals and families during some of their most vulnerable moments. Nursing was more than an occupation for Mary; it was a ministry. Her gentle hands, patient spirit, reassuring presence, and compassionate heart brought comfort to countless people. Mary also served as a nurse at the Union Hall, where she provided care to hardworking men and women within the community. Even beyond her professional responsibilities, her desire to serve never diminished. She volunteered with community organizations, participated in outreach activities, and gave her time to local food banks, always willing to help ensure that those experiencing hardship were treated with dignity and compassion. Mary understood that one of life's greatest blessings is the ability to be a blessing to someone else. A Beautiful Love and a Growing Family In 1950, Mary married the love of her life, George Wilbert Smith Sr. Together, they began building a life grounded in love, commitment, faith, and family. In 1951, their journey brought them to Wilmington, Delaware, and they were blessed with two beloved children, Cynthia and George W. Smith. In 1953, the family settled in Chester, Pennsylvania, where Mary would establish deep roots and become a cherished part of both her church and community. Although Mary accomplished much throughout her lifetime, nothing brought her greater joy than her family. She treasured the gatherings, conversations, laughter, meals, celebrations, and simple moments spent surrounded by those she loved. She enjoyed music, traveling, cooking, church activities, community service, and bringing family together. Her home and her heart were places where generations could find love, wisdom, encouragement, and belonging. Mary was especially grateful for her daughter-in-law, TaLisa “Lisa” Smith, whom she regarded as a precious gift to the family. Her Beautiful Legacy Those blessed to know Mary will remember her radiant smile, generous heart, gentle spirit, quiet strength, and willingness to serve. She had a way of making people feel welcomed, cared for, and loved. Her life reminds us that true greatness is not measured by titles, possessions, or recognition, but by the lives we touch, the love we give, the faith we demonstrate, and the legacy we leave behind. Mary was blessed to witness something few people ever experience, the unfolding of five generations of her family. She saw children become adults, grandchildren grow and flourish, and new generations come into the world carrying forward the family legacy she helped establish. Her 101 years represent more than longevity. They represent 101 years of prayers prayed, lives touched, lessons taught, sacrifices made, people cared for, family gatherings shared, challenges overcome, and faith sustained. The words of Psalm 92:14 beautifully reflect the testimony of her life: “They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing.” Mary continued to bear fruit throughout her life. The evidence of that fruit can be seen in her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, church family, and countless others whose lives were made better because she lived. Cherished Memories Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George Wilbert Smith Sr.; her siblings, Isadale Tucker, Pauline McLaurin, Johnnie Thompson, Edmond Thompson, Joseph Thompson, and Nadeen Smith; and her grandson, Shane Smith. She leaves to cherish her precious memory her two beloved children, Cynthia Stewart and George W. Smith (TaLisa); her grandchildren, Darnell, Semijah, Semaj, GiEira, Yahvae, Asiyah, Christopher Rafiq, Elisha, Elijah, Timothy, Destiny, and Sahara; 27 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a loving host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, church family, her neighbors, the Richardson family, dear friends, and her god daughter, Sandy Barnes. While her earthly presence will be deeply missed, Mary’s influence will never disappear. Her wisdom lives in the lessons she taught. Her compassion lives in those she cared for. Her faith lives in the generations who watched her walk with God. Her love lives in the family she nurtured. After 101 remarkable years, Mary Elizabeth Smith leaves behind more than memories, she leaves a legacy. A legacy of faith. A legacy of family. A legacy of service. A legacy of strength. A legacy of love. And although we mourn because we will miss her presence, we rejoice knowing that the God whom Mary faithfully served throughout her life has now welcomed His daughter home. She fought a good fight. She finished her course. She kept the faith. Rest well, Mary Elizabeth Smith. Your work has spoken for you. Your love will remain with us. Your faith has shown us the way.
