Jon W. Reid

Jon Wesley Reid, Sr. was born September 8, 1941 to parents Dumah and Bernetta Reid of Nicetown, North Philadelphia. Jon passed away on January 30, 2026 at Riddle Memorial Hospital. He was the youngest sibling to brothers Larry and Drexel Reid Jon graduated from Simon Gratz High school, and Morgan State University where he participated in gymnastics, and swimming, he became certified as a lifeguard. He went on to earn a Masters in Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1978, Jon moved to Chester, PA and was hired by Crozer Chester Medical Center where he began as a drug rehabilitation counselor at Chesters Methadone clinic. He guided individuals toward recovery and restoration. He and his friend organized a city wide neighborhood Drug Prevention Initiative, “People Against Alcohol and Drugs,” which included a poster contest and Christian concert at Chester High School. He served on other committees and coalitions that would meet to improve the conditions of the city. He was later appointed to Director of Crozer’s Addiction Treatment Services for several years. He continued to provide counsel for families and youth at the CYS Adolescence Program at Crozer Community Hospital. He hosted a weekly bible study and group discussion with the detained youth at Sleighton Farm. In 1985, Jon joined the First Pentecostal Holy Church. Jon attended both Sunday school and service each week and became a Sunday school teacher for the adult class. He supported his children in the choir and usher board. Jon later became an instructor for the School of Ministry at First Pentecostal Holy Church. He poured himself into his role preparing lessons and notes for his weekly class in the evening. Jon has made friends throughout his life journey that he loved. He found joy in discussion among those he encountered. His hobbies were craftsmanship, painting and wood carving; he made several wooden canes, archery; an activity he enjoyed with his brothers and father, swimming, fitness, calligraphy, and videography. He cared for plants and animals for many years. He enjoyed arraigning displays of all things that he loved. He was a family man. Yet, the greatest asset he cherished was his relationship with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. People who knew him felt the warmth of his presence, the steadiness of his counsel, and the sincerity of a heart shaped by compassion. His life was a testament to endurance, to devotion, and to the quiet miracles found in everyday acts of care and forgiveness. He is survived by his son Jon Reid Jr. and wife Lynda Reid, mother Cheryl Pettie, his daughters Jodi and Abigail. His grandchildren Jon Reid III, Khadijah, and Asad. His great grandchild Lianna Jackson. His several nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, and wife Gladys Reid, who now welcome him into the great communion of saints.
