“Absent from our view but present Lord, with You” Joan Yvette Charlton-McKie, affectionately called ‘Joanie’ was born on June 24, 1963 in Chester, PA. Joanie joined the heavenly host including her mother Margaret E. Charlton on Monday April 5, 2021 at the Kindred Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. Joanie was educated in the Chester Public School District graduating in 1981 from Chester High School. Joanie, together with her two precious sons, Dion and Stacy, relocated to Landover, MD joining her sisters Cimmy and Ginger and their families, always having the loving support of her family. There, Joanie married and from that union a beautiful baby girl, Janae, was born. In Maryland, she fostered many lasting friendships. She returned to Chester in 2017 until her passing. Joanie accepted Christ at an early age at Providence Baptist Church in Chester, PA. She later joined Open Door Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Bernard M. Taylor. There, she joined the church choir and was active in church and pastoral events. She often shared how she read her Bible, and how strong her faith was and constantly prayed for all. Her family is forever grateful to Rev. Taylor and the Open Door Baptist Church congregation for their caring and thoughtfulness extended to Joanie as they were always there for her when she needed them. Joanie was a dedicated employee at both Finra and Xerox Companies in Washington, DC. There she was blessed to have lasting friendships with her co-workers. In her spare time, she enjoyed chatting with her family and friends, Facebook and watching her favorite show,- Little House on the Prairie. Joanie treasured her children and grandchildren and embraced every moment with them. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren's football games, holidays, vacations and special gatherings with her loving family. Her nephew Sheldon, with whom she grew up with, holding a special bond from infancy, affectionately referred to each other as “Shaka” (Sheldon) and “Shabiba” (Joanie). “Shaka”/Sheldon was her knight and shining armor as she thought he could conquer the world. He was with her until the very end as she took her last breath. Her very special childhood friend who stuck by her through thick and thin, Caprice, know that you gave a new meaning to friendship and please know you were near and dear to her heart. A special thanks to Roc, Dana and Roland who also provided extended care to her. Joanie was predeceased by her mother, Margaret E. Charlton, siblings; Maurice “Buzzy” Charlton, Clinton “Mickey” Charlton, Marlene “Ginger” Charlton and Doreatha “Tami” Charlton. She leaves to cherish her precious memories: Sons, Dion and Stacy Charlton; Daughter, Janae McKie; grandchildren Diondre, Demetrius, Dallen, Di-Ganey, Alayah, Staci, Samaj and Jacob; Brother, Geoffrey “Jay” Charlton; Sisters, Alfreda Reed (Rev. J. T. Reed), Judith Purnell (Matthew), Cheryl Charlton, Cynthia James and Karen Brooks (Waverly), and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.
