Dorothy Lee Cobb

DOROTHY LEE COBB, daughter of Essie Williams and Charlie Thompkins, was born on February 7, 1929, in Durham, North Carolina. SHE was educated in the Durham Public School System. At the age of 18, Dorothy moved to Philadelphia, PA, to live with her Aunt Gertrude. Sometime later, she moved to Chester, PA, where she worked various jobs, retiring from Swarthmore College after 30 plus years of service. DOROTHY would tell you that her greatest accomplishments were her five children, who she doted on and loved dearly. In HER early years, Dorothy joined Bethany Baptist Church where she was baptized and accepted the Lord under the tutelage of Pastor Daniel Scott. While at Bethany, she served in various capacities within the church. In her later years, she joined White Rock Christian Church (now Christian Church of Chester), where she was an active member until her health prevented her attendance. Always wanting to do according to God's Word, Dorothy would constantly call her son, Russell, to remind him to come pick up her tithes. DOROTHY was a kind and humble person whose warm southern hospitality made others feel instantly at home in her presence. She exemplified unconditional love to her family and friends. She would tell you that “the secret to living a long life was being kind to people”. Dorothy was a great cook who used her cooking skills to show her love and to bring her family together for dinners and holiday feasts. She did this right up to her passing, saying that “God and Family is ALL you have”. SHE enjoyed lively upbeat gospel and jazz music, good singing, dressing up and telling stories of the old days. There was so much wisdom and life lessons that she instilled in her family and others over the years. SHE will be most remembered for the bond she had with each and every one of her grandchildren. She carried the title of “grandmom”, but she was so much more than that. She was a friend, a confidante, a great story teller, and a very good “secret’ keeper. The impact that Dorothy Lee had on her grandchildren was truly remarkable and will be cherished by them forever. On January 16, 2025, DOROTHY peacefully departed this life at the age of 95 in the comfort of her home in Chester, PA, and went to her eternal home to be with her Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents: Charlie Thompkins; Herbert and Essie (Higgins) Williams; and her son, Curtis. Beautiful memories of her life will forever remain in the hearts of her children: Nathan “Bobby” Thomson of Durham, NC; William Russell (Cynthia) of Brookhaven; and, Connie and Shelly of Chester. Her love and kindness will forever be treasured in the hearts of her grandchildren: Russell (Manny), Keith, Aaron (Kim), Courtland (Jenel), Michael (Dayna), Mychal, Derrick, Tiffany, Nicole, Yasmine, and 19 great and great-grands. A beloved “bonus” daughter, Sharon Pierce; and, a host of cousins, and friends, including her Christian Church of Chester Family. And Lastly, we dare not forget her “buddy” ~ Jo-Jo.
