Doris Mary Williams

Doris Mary Adams was born in Chester, PA on July 21, 1937. She was the third of five beautiful daughters born to Charles H. Adams and Marie Dowdy Adams. A lifelong resident of Chester, Doris attended Booker T. Washington Elementa- ry, Frederick Douglass Junior High, and was a graduate of Chester High School’s Class of 1955. On April 1, 1957, Doris married her sweetheart, Willie C . Williams. This union was blessed with three children, Lynette (Ann), Kevin, and Janet. They were married for 45 years until Willie’s death in 2002. Doris was a member of Calvary Baptist Church since childhood and was baptized under the pas- torate of the Rev. Dr. Joseph Pius Barbour. She enjoyed attending services with her family and instilled the same values in her children that she was brought up with. She served faithfully there until her health no longer permitted her to do so. “Di”, as she was affectionately called by her children, was a loving and devoted mother. She loved traveling, sewing, reading, casinos, playing her hand held solitaire game, scratch offs and lotteries, couponing, shopping in the markets (daily), and eating out. She was also called “Big Doris” by her nieces and nephews, lovingly, so as not to be con- fused with her niece and namesake - Doris Mary. A former employee of the Brandywine Mushroom Factory and the Franklin Mint, Doris moved on to work for Bell Atlantic/Verizon as a telephone operator from which she retired in 2000. This allowed her a lot more family time. She loved her family and especially loved being surrounded by her grandchildren. “Big Doris” was friendly, hospitable (always offering something to eat or drink), and reserved but fun. She was known for her candy jars filled with candy. On April 8, 2020, the Angels whispered “Sweet Peace” to our beloved and she transitioned, at home, with her family by her side. She was pre- deceased by her husband, her parents, her grandson Carl B. Johnson, and her sisters Viola Cochran, Bernice Riley, and Helen Thomas. Doris leaves to cherish her love, her Children: Lynette, Kevin, and Janet Williams, 8 Grandchildren: Kevin Johnson, Mychal Williams, Ashley Johnson, Karla Williams, Calvin Williams, Aaron Williams, Steven Williams, and Janiah Garnett, 12 Great Grandchildren, one Great Great Grandchild, her Sister Gloria E. Taylor, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and others who will miss her dearly. “To God be the glory for this amazing and wonderful life.”
