Doris Alfreda Ellis

Doris Ellis was born on November 11, 1931, to the late Robert “Barney” Brown and Hannah Brown. She departed from this life on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at Crozer Chester Medical Center, surrounded by her family. Doris was educated in the Chester Public Schools. Following her education, she was employed by Chester Hospital in the dietary department. After leaving Chester Hospital, she began working with the Greater Chester Movement to assist senior citizens in the community. Doris worked with the seniors at the center as well as making home visits. She then continued employment with the Chester Public Schools as a swim aide, lunch aide and finally, a bus aide until the arrival of her first grandchild. Once her grandchildren arrived, they became Doris’ first priority, ensuring their every need was met -whether it was making them a meal or walking them to school every day. Later, she would see her great-granddaughter from the bus stop every afternoon. Doris spent many of her years babysitting other family members’ children. Doris was raised in the St. Daniel’s United Methodist Church with her family. While a member, she hosted class meetings at her home and attended meetings at other classmates’ homes. In 1992, after visiting for several years, she joined her husband, Frizzel, at his home church, First Pentecostal Holy Church, where she remained a member in good standing until her passing. In 2000, Doris returned to the workforce as an infant room teacher at Precious Seed Daycare Center. She poured the same love and care into her students as she did with her grandchildren and family members. Doris loved her family deeply -- her husband, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She lived to make them happy. She loved spending time with them all, going on weekly shopping trips, having family dinners, going out to eat, and family vacations. Doris also loved a good casino trip. If you came to visit you would find Doris watching Divorce Court, Paternity Court, Hot Bench, or in Sparta with Chief Bill Gillespie in the Heat of the Night. But her all-time favorite was Family Feud with Steve Harvey. When she was not watching TV, she was often working on a word search book or playing casino slots game on her tablet. Doris was also recognizable by her distinctive blonde hair cared for by Sharon Gordon McLaurin and her gold jewelry. She was also known for her stylish nails done by Raushanah Carter whom she affectionately called “My girl Shanah.” Doris looked forward to her biweekly hair and nail appointments at Rasheedah’s Exquisite Hair Designs --not only to see Raushanah and Sharon, but she loved her girls Staci Miller, Rasheedah Carter, and Brionna Carter. Doris always stayed stylish and up to date with the latest fashions and pocketbooks. Doris was predeceased by her husband, Frizzel Ellis; son Karl Brown; five brothers: Clarence “Fatso” Brown, Sr., Robert “Bobbie” Brown, James “Jimmy” Brown, Norman “Cokie” Brown, Sr., and Martin “Marty” Brown. Doris leaves to cherish fond memories: three daughters Pamela D. Johnson, Renee Caple, and Melva Ellis; two sisters Elaine “Snu” Savage and Kay Davis; six grandchildren Renee Brown, J’Me L. Johnson, Edmond Bruce Caple, Alvin Ellis, James P. Johnson, III (Myisha) and Cheree Caple; seven great-grandchildren Jazmine Caple, Mariah Kinder, Jalen Caple, Semaj Johnson, Brea Kegler, Madison McLaughlin and Zoey McLaughlin; three sisters-in-law Francis Brown, Sandra Brown, Donna Brown and Roberta Brown; three godchildren Cynthia McNeil, Eugene “Butchie” Davis and Javon Johnson; two special nieces Sandra Pittman and Nadine Davis; two special nephews Clarence “Pooh” Brown, Jr. and Norman “Choo” Brown, Jr.; one honorary grandson Robert Burton, Jr. ; two special friends Goldie Jennings-Countee and Pamela Collins-Sellar; and the entire Taylor Family; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
